Bellmon Family Names Memorial Recipients

Services for Henry Bellmon are scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church in Edmond and at 3 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Perry. Burial will at the Union Cemetery in his hometown of Billings.

The family has asked that memorials be made to the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation, 825 NE 13, Oklahoma City, OK 73104 or to the Henry Bellmon Endowment, Oklahoma State University Foundation, P.O. Box 1749, Stillwater, OK 74076-1749.

Crowd Expected To Honor Bellmon's Memory

The body of former Governor and U. S. Senator Henry Bellmon, who died Tuesday, will lie in repose at the Capitol from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today.

Capitol officials expect a large number of Oklahomans, including private citizens and officials, will honor Bellmon's memory by their presence.

Bellmon Services Set For Edmond, Perry

Funeral services for the late Governor and U. S. Senator Henry Bellmon will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church, 1001 South Rankin in Edmond, and at 3 p.m. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church, 422 Eighth in Perry.

Bellmon's body will lie in repose at the Capitol from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday.

Bellmon's Body To Lie In Repose At Capitol

The body of former Governor and U. S. Senator Henry Bellmon, who died Tuesday, will lie in repose at the Capitol from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday.

Funeral services tentatively are scheduled Saturday in Perry and Oklahoma City. Service details are are pending with Dugger Funeral Home in Billings. The Perry service likely will be held at Bellmon's church, First Presyterian.

Leaders Mourn Bellmon, Praise His Record

Governor Henry today ordered that all flags on state property be flown at half staff in honor of former governor and U.S. Senator Henry Bellmon, who died this morning at the age of 88.

“Oklahoma today mourns the passing of a legend,” Henry said.

“Henry Bellmon was not only a proud Oklahoman, but in many ways embodied Oklahoma -- tough-minded, hard-working, honest, patriotic and a true son of the land. He was a man who preferred deeds to words. Most important, Henry Bellmon was a superb leader and public servant who always sought to better this state he so dearly loved. From the State Capitol to the chamber of the United States Senate, Henry Bellmon served his constituents with quiet dignity and an even hand.”

Henry added that he was privileged to have known Bellmon.

“For me, he was a personal hero and an inspiration,” he said. “Gov. Bellmon demonstrated that politics did not have to succumb to the rancor and showmanship that can so often mar the process. He was a consensus builder whose convictions transcended partisanship and ideology. I am grateful to have been friends with this extraordinary man, and I am better for having known him. All Oklahomans, in fact, are better for having benefited from his strong and steady leadership. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this time.”

BELLMON DEAD

Former Republican Governor and U. S. Senator Henry Bellmon, 88, died about 8 a.m. this morning, numerous Republican sources report.

Bellmon died at an Enid hospital as a result of complications from Parkinson's disease. His family was with Bellmon when he died.

Bellmon was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease after completing his second term as Oklahoma governor in 1991. He had been hospitalized with complications from the disease since Sunday.

Democratic Leader Danny Morgan, D-Prague, said, “Oklahoma lost an icon today with the passing of former governor and United States Senator Henry Bellmon. He was a true statesman, and his legacy will be felt for years to come. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time.”

Former GOP House Leader Jim Connor Dies

Former Republican House leader Jim Connor of Bartlesville is dead at age 75.

Connor, an attorney, served in the House from 1962 to 1970 and was one of those involved in the 1965 House impachment of then-Supreme Court Justice N. B. Johnson for bribery.

Connor was a key adviser to Republican Governor Henry Bellmon and his successor, Dewey F. Bartlett and carried much of Bartlett's legislative program in the House.

Bellmon Suffers Mini-Stroke, Wife Confirms

News outlets are reporting today that former Governor and U. S. Senator Henry Bellmon is recovering from a minor stroke he suffered last week. His wife, Eloise, said the 85-year-old Bellmon had gone to Enid to visit one of his daughters on September 12 when he awoke from a nap and sensed a problem. He went to a doctor in Enid who said he had suffered a mini-stroke. He was hospitalized in Enid until later that week and then sent home to Billings where his farm is located.
