Gone are the days in the 1930s when Democrat Huey Long stood astride Louisiana politics, a populist pushing a near-revolutionary program to help the state’s poor. Also gone are the days of the 1970s, ‘80s & ‘90s, when Democrat Edwin Edwards, a populist of a lesser ideological bent, could laugh off his scandals all the way to victory.
