Lankford Honors Oklahoma Student Art Winner

Congressman Lankford and
Landonn Gates
Congressman James Lankford welcomed Landonn Gates, this year’s Congressional Art Competition winner from Oklahoma’s Fifth District, for an awards ceremony and reception honoring winners from across the nation.

Gates is a resident of Spencer, OK, and a recent graduate of Midwest City High School and art student of April Williams.

“It is an honor to celebrate young talent from our district and nationwide during today’s award ceremony,” said Lankford. “Landonn’s artwork was inspired by the theme of ‘Oklahoma,’ and truly reflects the spirit and pride of our state. I am proud of both his talent and dedication. It will be a privilege to walk by his piece on display each day I am in Washington. Landonn’s artwork and all those from across the country serves as a reminder of the incredible creativity among America’s youth.”

“I wanted to create a snapshot of the everyday agricultural industry within Oklahoma and ultimately decided to paint cows grazing within a pasture,” said Gates.

Note: Gates’ artwork, entitled Market Fresh, was inspired by and painted on a brown paper grocery bag from Braum’s Dairy Stores. His piece featured a mixture of conté crayon and watercolor and will be displayed in the tunnel leading to the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C. for one year. The Congressional Art Competition featured work by high school students, with winners being selected from each Congressional district.
