Congresswoman Ellers Says She'll Carry Firearm

RALEIGH, N.C. ~  North Carolina's newest member of Congress, Renee Ellmers, said the deadly shooting rampage in Arizona has made her concerned for her own safety.

Ellmers said she has a concealed carry permit and plans to carry a handgun at public events.

She rejects the notion that the shooting is reason for more gun, ammo or pistol magazine control laws.

"I think it was an isolated incident and has more to do with the individual who committed the crime than the actual ammo he was using," said Ellmers.

North Carolina Congressman Health Shuler has also said in recent weeks he will carry a concealed weapon during events. He's been doing so in Washington, D.C. since receiving death threats in 2009.
