Garrett: Public Schools Grow Over Years

Outgoing School Superintendent Sandy Garrett said Wednesday that current enrollment in the state's public schools has reached almost 660,000, up 25,000 over five years ago and up about 5,100 over last year.

The figures show that public school districts and charter school sites, and pre-kindergarten through 12th grade enrollment for the current school year is 659,615. That's 5,073 more students than the previous school year and more than 25,000 more than five years ago.

Garrett, a Democrat retiring after 20 years and five successful elections to the post, said the numbers show that Oklahoma's student population is:

55 percent white
18 percent American Indian
12 percent Hispanic
10 percent black
2 percent Asian
3 percent of two or more races.
