Census Estimate: State Gains 300,000 Citizens

The Sooner State gained more than 300,000 residents since 2000 as the state posted a population growth rate of 8.7 percent.

That's based on new Census data, which shows Oklahoma's population at 3,751,351 as of April 1. That's up from 3,450,654 people in 2000.

The new population estimate doesn't affect the number of congressional seats the state has; it remains at five.

Texas, with a large population surge, will add four U. S. House seats to match its growing population.
