Coburn, Stern Team Up To Trim Defense Budget

By Jill Lawrence/Politics Daily ~ Conservative Sen. Tom Coburn of Oklahoma and liberal labor leader Andrew Stern don't come to mind as natural partners. But they are on a joint mission to trim the nation's $625 billion defense budget.

Former Sen. Alan Simpson of Wyoming, co-chair of the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform, dropped word of the unusual pairing at a recent presentation to governors in Boston. "Two very good men with sharp minds and sharp knives," he said, their goal to excise the fat "without hurting our troops or our mission."
