The Gadfly Celebrates 2nd Amendment Weekends
South Carolina and Louisiana are doing all they can to encourage the purchase of firearms.
In South Carolina, the Revenue Department reminds that this is Second Amendment Weekend in that state, giving a 48-hour tax break on the purchase of handguns, rifles and shotguns. That's a savings of 9 percent, for which gun-buying Palmetto State residents can give thanks.
In Louisiana, the sales tax holiday comes in September each year. There, the tax break applies to any item used for hunting or fishing and that includes off-road vehicles, airboats, animal feed, ear plugs, ammo and guns. That's a huge savings for the sportsman.
I'm certain there are those in some cities and states with unfriendly attitudes toward the shooting sports who look down their noses with disdain on such tax breaks. I can hear them now, muttering about state governments encouraging the animal killers and the gun nuts.
Let me offer my opinion on this in as genteel a fashion as possible: I'd damn sure rather be located in a state like Oklahoma that's friendly to hunters and gun owners than in one that isn't. In friendly states, as we know, most folks just believe it's important to be prepared to defend family, self and home and to be able to hunt to put food on the table and/or a trophy on the wall.
The South Carolina and Louisiana Second Amendment Weekends should be the norm across the nation. Let's encourage our legislators to make it so. ~ This commentary by Mike McCarville aired on Sirius Satellite Radio Patriot Channel 144 and on NRA News earlier this week.
