With Palin's Help, Chambliss Wins Georgia Race
Riding a wave of enthusiasm generated in part by Alaska Governor Sarah Palin's election eve appearances on his behalf, Georgia Republican Senator Saxby Chambliss handed the GOP a firewall against Democrats eager to flex their newfound political muscle in Washington, winning a bruising runoff battle. With 92 percent of the precincts reporting, Chambliss had what amounted to a landslide victory, 58-42 percent, over Democrat Jim Martin. Bill Clinton and Al Gore, and other prominent Democrats, had campaigned for Chambliss' Democratic opponent. President-elect Barack Obama did not appear personally, but did record a telephone message the campaign used.
