Romney Suspends Campaign

UPDATED ~ Mitt Romney suspended his campaign today, making the announcement at 12:07 p.m. at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington, D.C.
"I feel I must now stand aside," Romney said to shouts of "No! No!" from the crowd.
He said his presence in the race makes it easier for Clinton and/or Obama: "If I fight on in my campaign, all the way to the convention, I would forestall the launch of a national campaign and make it more likely that Senator Clinton or Obama would win. And in this time of war, I simply cannot let my campaign be a part of aiding a surrender to terror," Romney said.
Romney's eloquent remarks, and his "party and nation before self" stance likely will make him a leading conservative spokesman and key player as the presidential race unfolds.

The stunning new development apparently gives Senator John McCain a clear path to the GOP nomination, although former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee remains a candidate.

Romney's decision apparently comes as a result of his lackluster showing on Super Tuesday.
He delivered an impassioned, stem-winder speech to the CPAC event, drawing sustained applause as he made numerous points, including "it is high time to lower taxes," "pork in bills is irritating and harmful," "we must have entitlement reform," "we must give veterans the care they deserve," "the face of liberalism soon will have a new name...whether it's Barack or Hillary," "Clinton and Obama would slow our economy," and "we must find and execute Osama bin Laden."
