Lugar Wants Daniels To Seek Presidency

From Politico ~ Sen. Dick Lugar (R-Ind.) intends to hold off on supporting any Republican presidential candidate in hopes that Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels jumps into the race.

Daniels has been coy about a potential run, but Lugar said Thursday during a luncheon speech in Indianapolis that he hopes the governor “strongly” considers a bid.

“I’m not going to support anybody else until I know what Mitch is going to do," Lugar said, according to the Evansville Courier & Press. "If he runs, I will support him.”

With an unsettled Republican presidential primary field, Daniels has been getting more mentions as a potential candidate.

The former director of the Office of Management and Budget for President George W. Bush has the support of many powerful Republicans around Washington who frequently boast of his performance at OMB and as governor of Indiana.

The support, in turn, has attracted flattering press attention in conservative circles, including a recent cover story profiling Daniels in The Weekly Standard.
